What is DTV?
Digital television (DTV) is a new type of broadcasting technology that will transform television. Because DTV is delivered digitally, it allows for the delivery of a signal virtually free of interference.
What is HDTV?
HDTV is a type of digital television service. HDTV provides a very high resolution combined with Dolby digital surround sound. The higher resolution displays up to ten times more image detail than standard TV. Many HDTV screens are wider than they are tall, providing a panoramic view, similar to theatre screens. This allows you to see movies as they were filmed, without resizing to fit your screen. There are also HDTV-capable sets that look like regular TVs, but provide HD format in a letterbox presentation (with black bars on the top and bottom of the TV image).
What is the difference between analog, digital, and HDTV?
Analog: Standard picture and sound quality up to 79 channels.
Digital: DVD picture and sound quality. More than 151 channels.
HDTV: Ten times better resolution/image detail than analog. Click! currently offers 19 channels and will continue to add them as they become available.
What are the HD formats and how do they differ?
There are two high definition formats: 720p and 1080i.
- The 720p format makes a picture with 720 vertical lines each with 1280 pixels horizontally, so it has a resolution of 1280 x 720. 720p uses progressive scanning, like computers, which sends a complete picture 60 times per second; it provides the smoothest possible motion resolution, but it does not have as much resolution as 1080i.
- The 1080i format makes pictures with 1080 vertical lines, each with 1920 pixels horizontally, so it has a resolution of 1920 x1080. 1080i uses interlaced scanning, like traditional TV, which alternates sending odd lines and even lines and thus sends a complete picture 30 times per second; it provides the highest resolution, producing a sharper picture when the image is "still" or has little motion.
When purchasing an HDTV, be sure it is capable of "up-converting" or "down-converting," enabling you to view all transmitted signals.
